8 Epic Things to Do in Highlands, North Carolina

Ever since I spent a long weekend at the Old Edwards Inn, Highlands has been one of my favorite NC destinations. If only it was closer to the Piedmont Triad and I could make a return trip!

While our girls’ getaway to the Old Edwards Inn centered around the spa, relaxation, and shopping, there is so much more to enjoy in this town.

It’s the perfect place if you’re looking to escape city life and are looking for a quiet retreat to the mountains.


About Highlands, North Carolina


Scenic and serene, Highlands is tucked high up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. This is close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and bordering South Carolina.

Highlands lies among the Nantahala National Forest, with gorgeous waterfalls, hiking trails, lakes, and scenic overlooks just minutes from downtown. Nearby Cashiers is its sister community to the south, and also offers fine mountain lodging, recreation and an artists’ colony.

The downtown area is extremely walkable, with restaurants, cafes, and shops just steps from many hotels.

Nestled in the southern Appalachian Mountains, Highlands offers plenty of fresh air and stunning scenery.

Take advantage of the mild summers and get outside to make the most of this mountain playground!!

Outdoor Activities

Bridal Veil Falls

There are miles of scenic trails in the Nantahala Forest surrounding Highlands. You can choose from wilderness paths, sections of the Appalachian Trail, or easier nature walks.

Some popular scenic spots you must check out are:

  • Whiteside Mountain

MOUNTAIN BIKE DOWNHILL TRAILS

The area has some sweet single track trails that weave through the forest and have jumps, berms, and other built features.

You could also try one of the downhill-specific bike parks in the area, where you can take the ski lift up and ride adrenaline-pumping trails back down.

FISH MOUNTAIN STREAMS

Cast your line in one of the cold, rushing streams in the Nantahala National Forest!

Whether you prefer lure fishing or fly fishing, you’ll have a chance to hook trout, smallmouth bass, and more. You can also try your luck in one of Highland’s well-stocked trout ponds.

Prior to fishing, make sure to get the proper NC fishing license.

CAMP & BACKPACK OVERNIGHT

Highlands is a wonderful place to enjoy the peacefulness of nature. Spend a night (or a few) camping under the stars.

You can pitch your tent at one of the area’s campgrounds or hike into the backcountry and set up a remote campsite. Just make sure to be “bear aware!”

EXPLORE DOWNTOWN

No matter the weather, exploring downtown is one of my favorite things to do in Highlands!

Explore the charming boutiques, art galleries, and specialty shops. You can find unique gifts, local crafts, clothing, and home dรฉcor items.

A popular store worth visiting is “Acorns Boutique”. It is a cute shop that sells a collection of stylish clothing, accessories, and home decor items. However, if you walk downtown, you’ll be able to find a store that sells anything from clothing to unique gifts and gourmet foods.

The Highlands Performing Arts Center in Highlands, NC, is a modern venue hosting a variety of performances throughout the year. With its excellent facilities, including a great theater space, it offers concerts, plays, and dance shows. The center also runs programs for all ages and holds community events.

SPA TREATMENT

It’s no secret that Old Edwards is a popular spa getaway for many in the Highlands (myself included!) It’s known for its luxurious amenities and calming atmosphere. They also have amazing customer service!

The Spa at Old Edwards offer a wide range of treatments, from massages and facials to body wraps and skincare rituals.

After a calming spa treatment, you can unwind in the sauna or steam room or enjoy a swim in the indoor heated pool.

Highlands makes an ideal base camp for exploring the surrounding area. Here are some of the top day trips and attractions just a short drive away!!!

Franklin & The Gem Capital

  • Just 30 minutes south, the quaint small town of Franklin calls itself the “Gem Capital of the World.”
  • Stop at local gem mining spots and try your hand at unearthing emeralds, rubies, and sapphires from old mines in the area.
  • Downtown Franklin has cute shops and eateries to explore when you need a break from gem hunting!

Nantahala Gorge & River

  • Head 15 minutes northwest from Highlands to take in the breathtaking views along the Nantahala River Gorge.
  • Options include white water rafting, kayaking, fly fishing, hiking, and mountain biking.

  • The charming village of Cashiers is only 14 miles from Highlands, but feels worlds away.

Bridal Veil Fall

  • One of the tallest cascading waterfalls east of the Mississippi River plunges over 120 feet.
  • A relatively easy uphill trail leads to an observation deck for photos and relaxing by the falls.
  • Just a 20-minute drive from Highlands in scenic Gorges State Park.

Highlands enjoys a temperate four-season climate that makes it suitable to visit year round. Late spring through early fall, however, brings warmer weather ideal for hiking, water sports, golf, and outdoor festivals. The summer months can get quite busy!

Summers in Highlands are mild and pleasant with average highs in the low 70s Fahrenheit. Evenings can get quite chilly due to the elevation. The area experiences all four seasons, with a good bit of rain year-round. Snow is common in winter but usually melts within a few days. Pack layers!
