History of the Park
In the early 1700s, European settlers began moving into the region, displacing the Native American tribes who had lived there for centuries. Over time, the land was used for farming, logging, and mining, and the area changed hands several times.
In the early 1900s, a man named John D. Rockefeller began buying up large tracts of land in the area with the intention of preserving it for public use. He eventually donated the land to the state of North Carolina, and in 1936, Hanging Rock State Park was officially established.
Over the years, the park has grown and expanded, with new trails, campgrounds, and amenities added to make it more accessible to visitors. Today, Hanging Rock State Park is a beloved destination for hikers, campers, and nature enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into the rich history and natural beauty of the North Carolina wilderness.
Getting to NC Hanging Rock State Park
The park is located in the northern central region of North Carolina (specifically Stokes County), just a short drive from Winston-Salem and Greensboro.
Hanging Rock State Park is 30 miles north of Winston-Salem and can be reached by Hanging Rock Park and Moore’s Spring Road. Most directions will take you through Danbury, a quaint town just four miles south of the park.
Lodging at NC Hanging Rock State Park
If you enjoy camping, you’re in luck! Hanging Rock State Park has campsites that are perfect for those looking to get close to nature. They have RV sites, tent sites, and cabins.
Reservations are required prior to arrival. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance. Holidays tend to book up quickly, so make sure you look ahead and make a reservation if you want to enjoy one of their many campsites!
Other accommodation options near Hanging Rock State Park are limited. Here are a few options I’ve stumbled across that I think are worth trying!
- Danbury Getaway Vacation Home: This vacation home is just 3 miles from Hanging Rock State Park. With 3 bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and a great location, this looks like a great place for families to stay.
- Cozy Bungalow: While this vacation home doesn’t look like much on the outside, the inside screams country charm. With just a quick 15-minute drive from Hanging Rock State Park, this could be the perfect place to escape for relaxation.
Best Time to Visit NC Hanging Rock State Park
The park is open year-round. Visiting Hanging Rock State Park can be enjoyed during all seasons, but it can get very chilly during the colder weather.
If you want to visit during the warmer weather, beat the crowds and arrive early at the park. Fall and Spring are both great times to explore this area!
Cost to Visit NC Hanging Rock State Park
There is no entrance fee to enter the park. If you are interested in a boating rental or swimming pass, these activities would incur an additional cost. In addition, camping and picnic shelter rentals would also cost extra.
The majority of the activities at Hanging Rock State Park can be enjoyed free of charge!
Things To Do At NC Hanging Rock State Park
Explore Waterfalls
As you explore the hiking trails of Hanging Rock State Park, be sure to keep an eye out for the park’s many waterfalls.
From the towering 200-foot cascade of Upper Cascades to the intimate, tucked-away beauty of Hidden Falls, there is no shortage of natural wonders to discover. Take a dip in the refreshing waters of Lower Cascades Falls or snap a photo of the picturesque Window Falls.
There are five waterfalls
- Upper Cascades: Take a 0.3-mile trail to the falls and observe the falls from a wooden observation deck.
- Hidden Falls: Take a moderate-difficulty 0.5-mile trail to the falls. Continue past Hidden Falls’ viewing area for .1 miles to view Window Falls.
- Window Falls: Trek up a moderate-difficulty 0.6-mile trail to the falls. You will pass the viewing area for Hidden Falls along the way!
- Tory’s Falls: Travel up a moderate-difficulty 300-yard trail to the falls. Seeing these falls can be difficult.
- Lower Cascades: Hike up a moderate-difficulty 0.3-mile trail to the falls. Did you know? The trail has recently been made easier with the addition of stairs to the swimming hole. It used to be extremely dangerous to navigate! (This is my favorite!!)
Go on a Wildlife Scavenger Hunt
This is a great (and inexpensive) way to keep the kids engaged!
As you explore the park’s trails and picnic areas, keep an eye out for signs of local wildlife. From deer and rabbits to foxes and squirrels, there is no shortage of animals to spot.
Challenge your family to see who can find the most critters, or create your own scavenger hunt with a list of specific animals or plants to look for. Check Out Tory’s Den
Take a short hike to Tory’s Den, a cave that’s located just four-tenths of a mile off the beaten path. It’s also noted to have been the hiding spot of British Loyalists during the Revolutionary War!
You’ll have to walk down a set of rock stairs that will circle around to the entrance of the cave. It’s almost camouflaged by the natural surroundings!
I’m not a history buff or history enthusiast, but seeing this cave was interesting. It’s definitely worth a quick visit to enjoy the moment and capture a few pics.
Photograph Nature
As you wander through the trails, take a moment to appreciate the variety of plant life that surrounds you. With an abundance of wildflowers, ferns, and trees, Hanging Rock State Park is a nature lover’s paradise.
Keep an eye out for the unique fauna, such as salamanders and newts, that call this park home. And don’t forget to snap some photos of the incredible views.
Enjoy a Picnic
Settle down at one of the park’s designated picnic areas and take in the stunning surroundings while enjoying a delicious meal. The peaceful and serene environment creates the perfect atmosphere for an afternoon picnic. You can pack a basket of your favorite snacks or grab a bite from one of the nearby cafes. Either way, you’ll be able to refuel and recharge for the next adventure.

Visit Moore’s Knob
The highest peak in the park, Moore’s Knob, is undoubtedly the most popular viewpoint. From the summit, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view that stretches across several counties in North Carolina, with the Blue Ridge Mountains visible on the horizon. If you time your visit just right, you might even catch a glimpse of the sunset over the rolling hills and dense forests.
Hike to the Top of Hanging Rock
If you’re looking for a less crowded spot to admire the scenery, there are plenty of options available. Hanging Rock itself is an iconic landmark, and the nearby lookout point offers a sweeping view of the valley below. For a more secluded experience, consider hiking to the top of Cook’s Wall, where you’ll be surrounded by nothing but nature and breathtaking views.
Explore the Secret Swimming Holes
To truly uncover the hidden swimming holes at Hanging Rock State Park, you’ll need to be willing to explore beyond the main entrance. While the park staff is always happy to provide directions, part of the fun is discovering these spots on your own.
As you wander along the park’s trails, keep an eye out for small streams or offshoots from the main creeks. These small pools can often be the perfect spot for a peaceful swim away from the crowds. But make sure to tread lightly and follow the “Leave No Trace principles” – these spots are fragile and should be treated with care.
Go Camping
If you’re looking to stay overnight and fully immerse yourself in the park’s beauty, consider camping. There are plenty of campsites available for both tents and RVs, and many of them offer incredible views of the surrounding mountains. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some wildlife while you’re there.
Go Fishing
